This Little-Known Town Is California’s Best Kept Secret For A Sunny Beach Vacation

Share The Article

They say “secrets, secrets are no fun”, but that just so happens to be Travel Off Path’s bread and butter.

Call us professional spoilers, if you will, but this one is long overdue like my high school homework.

If you thought the household names, say San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego were the only worthwhile “Golden State” getaways, it’s time for a 2026 refresher.

Crowd-free beach in Ventura, CA

Folks at the SF Gate, a major news platform for the Bay Area, are touting one of the Central Coast’s unsung destinations, overshadowed by Santa Barbara, as California’s next big thing for the West Coast.

While wineries are a must in this region, it’s the sensational food scene that’s beginning to catch fire — but we believe it’s far more than a foodie hotspot and bronzed-bod surfer haven.

It’s a bona fide vacation destination with name-brand hotels, spacious shores, and no shortage of day trips nearby, both inland into wine country and neighboring coastal gems.

Feeling Ad-Ventura-Ous? Visit Ventura!

Booking a California vacay is easy. You could quite literally scan your finger on a map and visit any coastal town you land on and not be disappointed.

That’s the beauty of Ventura too — it’s a name you may have heard of but can’t “clock it” as the kids say.

This town of roughly 110,000 people is more locally beloved than renowned nationwide. Its most notable neighbor is Santa Barbara, hogging the spotlight.

As numerous reports claim, travelers are venturing out beyond the names we’ve grown to love, one of many reasons why icons such as LA are struggling with tourism.

Ventura, CA sunset

Ventura is the perfect spot to experience an authentic West Coast escape free of the curated cheesiness of Hollywood, jam-packed boardwalks of Venice Beach, and reasonable prices across the board — at least for California standards.

The Central Coast, sandwiched between more notorious SoCal and famed road trip stopping points of NorCal, largely goes overlooked with the exception of Santa Barbara.

With fewer footprints in the sand, more open barstools at beachside hangs, and oceanfront hotels like Crowne Plaza and Marriott, Ventura is more than an add-on to a PCH road trip — it’s the main event.

The Perfect Central Coast Base

As Santa Barbara continues on a record-breaking tear for tourism, prices tend to reflect that.

For example, a stay at Ventura’s Crowne Plaza only sets you back about $150 per night through May, while Santa Barbara’s beachfront Hilton is over $250 per night during the same window.

Being so close, you can easily fly into one of Santa Barbara’s numerous new flights and make your way to Ventura in about half an hour — with incredible Pacific views to kickstart your trip.

Once here, you have multiple beaches, such as fan-favorite Ventura Beach with an In-N-Out Burger in walking distance.

That’s a must, right?

If you stay in the heart of town near the extensive Ventura Pier, everything you need is in close distance, from the Crowne Plaza hotel, other cozy boutique stays, pretty parks, and even the Amtrak station if you want to skip much of California’s $6 per gallon gas prices right now.

But you’ll discover that a visit to the Central Coast is no one-stop shop — it’s a treasure trove.

Since Ventura is considered the southernmost gateway to the Central Coast, here are Travel Off Path’s 3 must-visit day trips when staying here:

Solvang California
  1. Channel Island National Park: A quick ferry trip from Ventura, offering a wild island escape with coastal hikes, sea caves, common wildlife sightings, and some of California’s most untouched scenery
  2. Solvang: A whimsical Danish-style town known for picturesque windmills, European-style architecture, and savory bakeries
  3. Ojai: A trendy celeb hideout laden with wineries, spas, and craft kombucha (yeah, it’s a hippie town)

Plus, Ventura is one of California’s safest destinations. According to its District Attorney, it’s actually the ‘safest large county‘ in the state!

The West Coast’s New Foodie Destination

Look, we get we’re not the Michelin Guide here, but our taste buds know a good meal.

Shrimp Tacos

In fact, as we said, Ventura is being touted as an incredible food destination no matter what your usual go-tos may be.

The city has embraced its new reputation, moving beyond a sleepy beach town with decent breweries and cafes.

A wave of new concepts has helped put it on the culinary map, driven in large part by the region’s agriculture.

No longer are only L.A.’s trendy restaurants taking advantage of what’s in their backyard — local restaurateurs are doing the same

Here are 4 restaurants you must try on your Ventura vacay:

  • Model Citizen
  • Buddy’s Wine Bar
  • Buena Bodega
  • Luke’s on Main
