If you’ve got a small-to-mid-sized lawn that’s not particularly even, then the Segway Navimow i205 AWD could be for you. With its three-wheel AWD system, this robot drives over rough ground and copes with bumps without getting stuck. Add in its excellent object detection and avoidance, the integrated 4G and Wi-Fi (no need for a reference station for most people), the brilliant app and low price, and this is a great choice for most people.

Introduction
Here in the UK, most of us don’t have huge gardens, but a lot of us do have uneven lawns with divots and bumps galore. That’s where the Segway Navimow i205 AWD comes in.
With its All Wheel Drive (AWD) system, this robot lawn mower is designed for bumpy terrain. Impressively, it’s available for under £ 1000, and you don’t need a reference station in many places.

Across all the robot lawn mower reviews we’ve done on Trusted Reviews, the one issue many have is that they struggle with lawns that aren’t perfectly flat. Whether it’s bumpy terrain, divots or plain old holes that your cat has dug out, many models can find themselves getting stuck, digging in deeper.
This is why All Wheel Drive (AWD) models have been so popular with us, as they can handle tough terrain. Now, with the Segway Navimow i205 AWD, I have the cheapest AWD model that I’ve seen, undercutting even the excellent Mammotion Luba Mini AWD 800.
The Segway I have on review is available in two different versions depending on the size of lawn you have: the Segway Navimow i205 AWD that I have, which can do lawns up to 500m2 or the i208 which is for lawns up to 800m2. Both versions are otherwise identical.
Externally, the robot looks much like its predecessor, the Segway Navimow i105E, which was one of my favourite robot lawn mowers – the first that I’d seen to ditch boundary wires and add a camera for improved navigation and obstacle avoidance.
There are big differences, starting with the AWD drive system. Providing better traction, the AWD system here also supports Xero-Turn, where the wheels can be controlled individually to turn the robot on a dime.
Rather than use four wheels, the Segway Navimow i205 AWD has three wheels, with the front one also powered. Many robots use a shopping trolley-style wheel at the front, but with the Segway Navimow i205 AWD, you get a full wheel.
Underneath, the layout is much as you expect, with a cutting disc that holds five blades. This gives an 18cm cutting width, which is relatively small, but then again, this robot is going to go into smaller gardens.
Another change is that in most areas the Segway Navimow i205 AWD can use network RTK for positioning. Rather than using a reference station to help with accurate positioning, the correction data is sent over the internet.
Wi-Fi is built in, but unlike the Husqvarna Automower 305E Nera there’s also 4G, so you can still use the cloud-based RTK system even if you don’t have perfect Wi-Fi coverage. And there’s no charge for the service.
4G also means that you can set a geo-fence in the app. If the robot is removed, it will sound a siren, lock itself and transmit its location to you. It’s impressive to have that kind of feature at this price.
If you do live in an area without good coverage, then Segway provides its reference station in the box.
Setup is brilliantly simple. In fact, it is one of the fastest robots that I’ve set up. Only the LawnMaster OcuMow 18 Autocharging Vision Robot Mower was faster, but that’s because that robot has no app, and doesn’t store a map.
With the Navimow, there’s just a base station to put down and connect to power, and then the robot needs to be turned on.
Then, the app took me through getting the robot connected to Wi-Fi and checking that it has satellite coverage. It all took a few minutes, after which I was prompted to do a firmware update and then the robot was ready to go.
As this is an intelligent robot, it needs to have a map of your garden, which you can either create by letting the Segway Navimow i205 AWD drive around automatically, or you can create it manually.
The former is good if you have clear boundaries, but creating your own map manually is better if you don’t have clear boundaries or you want to avoid certain areas.
Manual mapping is very easy, and all I had to do was drive the robot around the boundary of my garden, with the map completed at the end.
Once done, the Segway Navimow i205 AWD is ready for mowing. Here, there’s only a manual height adjustment dial on top, which let me select a cutting height of between 2cm and 6cm. It’s easy to use, but I do prefer an automatic adjustment, as it makes it easier to adjust cutting height through the season.
Once your cutting height is set, the Segway Navimow i205 AWD can be set to cut your lawn. This can be done manually, and the robot will go out until it has covered the area, returning to dock when it’s 100% complete.
Alternatively, you can set the Segway Navimow i205 AWD to cut on a schedule. Schedules are easy to set and default to the robot returning to dock when 100% of the area has been cut. However, there’s also a switch that lets the robot continue cutting continuously during the time block.

I used the Segway Navimow i205 AWD on my slightly uneven lawn, giving it a few weeks to settle in. I immediately noticed how powerful it is. I’ve got a section of the garden where the cats keep digging up the soil, but the i205 can charge straight through this area and never got stuck once.
VisionFence is built into the camera at the front. This recognises 150+ obstacles, including furniture, animals, people and toys, letting the robot move around them. It works very well. Scattering my lawn with a sample of different objects, I found that the Segway Navimow i205 AWD easily moved around them, while cutting the rest of the grass.
While it’s better to clear the lawn for a clear cut, at least leaving things out doesn’t ruin the Segway Navimow i205 AWD’s ability to mow the lawn.
There’s an option in the app to turn on the Animal Friendly mode, which will let the lawn mower look out for small animals, such as hedgehogs and avoid them. This mode makes the Segway Navimow i205 AWD take a wide berth around obstacles, so some areas may be skipped for mowing; however, the next time, the robot will catch these areas.
Cutting performance is very good. As long as your lawn has been cut to a height of 6cm (or less) before you run the Segway Navimow i205 AWD for the first time, its coverage is excellent. Depending on the height of your grass, and whether any of it has been flattened, it can take a few passes to really get everything. After a week or so, I found that the i205 fully covered my garden, neatly cutting it and leaving it with a springy feel.
Edge performance is alright, but there’s always a small section that you’ll need to tackle with a grass trimmer manually.
I do like its ability to return to dock when the area has been covered, as it means that the lawn mower is only out for the minimum amount of time.
Should you buy it?
You want a powerful, smart robot lawn mower
With AWD this lawn mower won’t get stuck, while its camera helps it skirt around objects on the lawn.
You have a bigger lawn or you want easier control over cutting height
Those with large lawns should look elsewhere, as should those who want app-controlled cutting height adjustment.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve got a small-to-mid-size garden that’s not the most even, the Segway Navimow i205 AWD is a brilliant robot lawn mower.
It’s smart, navigates well, cuts brilliantly and can avoid obstacles. In many cases, it doesn’t even need a reference station. Provided you don’t need something that can cut a larger lawn, and you can live without app-controlled cutting height, this robot lawn mower is near-perfect.
