Twelve Tons of KitKats Were Stolen, and You Can Help Find Them

On March 29, Kit Kat posted on Instagram that 12 tons of KitKats (about 413,793 bars) were stolen between Italy and Poland. Both the chocolate bars and the truck carrying them vanished and remain missing.

Nestle is now searching for the hijacked KitKat bars, and it’s asking the public to help find them.

If the thief is trying to sell the candy, they might get tripped up. Nestle knows the serial numbers of the missing bars. Since the theft happened in Europe, candy sold in the US probably isn’t affected. These aren’t the traditional KitKats, but special-edition car-shaped KitKats developed for a Formula 1 promotion.

A representative for KitKat did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Stolen KitKat Tracker

KitKat launched the Stolen KitKat Tracker on April 1, though it’s no April Fools’ Day joke. To use the Stolen KitKat Tracker, enter the 8-digit batch number from your candy to determine if it’s from the missing group. KitKat will then provide specific instructions on what to do next, including how to submit the evidence.

Brands aren’t giving KitKat a break

Other brands are already poking fun at the brand’s heist, with many using the KitKat slogan: “Gimme a break.”

The account for Hostess Snacks cracked: “Ugh, you just can’t catch a break.”

Fashion platform Gilt says: “Don’t let our name fool you. We are totally innocent *wipes chocolate from mouth,*”

Task Rabbit is calling for help, saying: “Taskers, assemble.”

And Tide Laundry also poked fun at the chocolate company’s tagline by commenting: “Tough break.”

Let’s hope there’s a break in the case soon.
