OpenAI is rolling out a more capable shopping experience in ChatGPT, with the update focused on making product discovery feel more useful and more visual.
The changes let users compare products more clearly, set preferences such as budget or specific features, and even upload images to help guide recommendations which will give ChatGPT a bigger role in the research stage of buying.
Rather than acting like a simple list of links, the new setup is designed to help users narrow down options faster, especially when they know the kind of product they want but have not yet settled on the exact model.
OpenAI also says it has improved speed, relevance, and overall product coverage behind the scenes, which should help recommendations feel broader and more up to date than before.
The more interesting change may be OpenAI’s decision to scale back Instant Checkout, after finding that users were more comfortable exploring products through ChatGPT than actually completing purchases inside it.

Instead of pushing people to buy directly through the chatbot, the company is now leaning more heavily into traditional merchant journeys, where ChatGPT helps with discovery and comparison before handing users off to a retailer.
That does not mean retailer partnerships are disappearing, though, with Walmart among the companies working more closely with OpenAI through features such as account linking, loyalty support, and payments integration.
OpenAI is also using its Agentic Commerce Protocol, or ACP, to strengthen the system in the background, helping merchants connect their product information more directly to ChatGPT so results can be more complete and responsive.
The overall message is fairly clear: OpenAI sees shopping in ChatGPT less as a replacement for online stores and more as a smarter starting point for figuring out what is worth buying.
The updated shopping experience is rolling out now to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users.
