MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Eastwood City’s Cyber & Fashion Atrium was transformed into a vibrant and interactive hub dedicated to the theme of sustainability. It hosted the event “Bantay Ilog: The PMRCIP IV Digital Info-Caravan,” an engaging public exhibition featuring informative displays, multimedia presentations, and hands-on activities. The exhibition aimed to raise awareness about crucial issues such as disaster preparedness and flood mitigation, specifically focusing on the vulnerable Pasig-Marikina River basin. Attendees were provided with valuable insights into flood risks, early warning systems, and community resilience strategies, making the event both educational and empowering.

On Friday, June 5, 2026, between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM, the campaign held its main seminar, which included project presentations, open forums, community solidarity ceremonies, and the finale of its digital exhibit.
Eastwood City opened its central areas to this vital campaign—led by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)—creating an accessible community hub where residents, professionals, and shoppers can easily engage with large-scale engineering projects and community initiatives that safeguard their neighborhoods.
From “Sagip Ilog” to “Bantay Ilog”
The event showcased the Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Project (PMRCIP) Phase IV, a key effort aimed at reducing flood risks in Metro Manila to promote a safer and more sustainable city environment.
In a featured statement, DPWH OIC Project Director Engr. Jerry Fano highlighted the longstanding history of the advocacy, mentioning that the campaign started in 2009 with the slogan “Sagip Ilog, Iwas Lubog!”. Over almost twenty years of collaboration with stakeholders, it evolved into “Bantay Ilog,” encouraging citizens to become active protectors of their local waterways.
Interactive Seminar and Community Gathering
The interactive seminar gathered prominent international and local project leaders to discuss various flood mitigation strategies, both structural and non-structural. The panel featured:
- Mr. Kazuto Suzuki, Project Manager of PMRCIP-IV
- Ms. Catherine Palanca, Senior Program Officer of JICA
- Engr. Norman N. Gamboa and Mr. Grecile Christopher R. Damo of the DPWH
To strengthen the connection between the campaign and the community, the seminar invited barangay chairpersons from nearby areas like Bagumbayan, Libis, Ugong Norte, and Blue Ridge B. The event also included special appearances by Miss Earth candidates representing Mandaluyong, Marikina, Pasig, and Quezon City, along with musical performances by the group Formula 5 to boost attendee engagement.
Bringing Public Awareness to a Shared Space
The digital exhibition transformed the mall’s atrium into an educational space, featuring LED digital posters and multimedia displays that simplified complex topics like climate change and flood mitigation into clear, understandable visuals.
Community members, stakeholders, and visitors were invited to explore the digital booths and participate in ongoing discussions that highlighted the importance of shared environmental awareness. The initiative demonstrated how collaborative public platforms can foster a better understanding of climate challenges and promote more informed, community-wide involvement.
