Google set to battle ChatGPT with a Gemini Mac app

Google looks ready to close one of Gemini’s biggest gaps.

A new report suggests the company is testing a dedicated macOS app. This move would finally bring its AI tool closer to rivals like ChatGPT and Claude on desktop.

According to Bloomberg, an early version of the Gemini Mac app has already been seeded to private testers. While it’s still missing some features, the direction is clear. Google wants Gemini to feel like a native part of the Mac, not just something you open in a browser tab.

Right now, Gemini is only accessible via the web on macOS, which adds friction especially when uploading files or juggling multiple tasks. By comparison, ChatGPT and Claude already offer native apps. These apps can hook into other Mac tools and support more advanced workflows.

The Gemini app appears to be heading in the same direction. Test builds reportedly include tools for generating images, video, music, charts and tables. There are also more typical AI features like analysing documents, searching the web, and revisiting past conversations. Additionally, there’s a growing focus on personalisation, with Gemini adapting responses based on user behaviour and uploaded content.

More interestingly, Google is working on something called “Desktop Intelligence.” This feature would allow Gemini to understand what’s happening across your Mac. It would effectively see on-screen context and pull information from other apps to provide more relevant help. It’s similar in concept to how competing AI tools are starting to integrate more deeply into desktop environments. However, Google’s approach leans heavily on real-time context.

Design-wise, the app is said to mirror Gemini’s mobile interface, keeping things familiar for users already on Android or iOS.

There’s no official release date yet, but timing could be key. With Google I/O scheduled for May, an announcement around then would make sense – especially as competition in the AI space continues to heat up.

If the final version delivers on deeper app integration and smarter context awareness, Gemini’s Mac app could turn Google’s AI from a handy tool into something that genuinely fits into everyday workflows.
