<h2 id=”h-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-summary-nbsp” class=”wp-block-heading”> Summary: </h2>
<ul class=”wp-block-list”>
<li>With almost no discussion, the board passed a series of resolutions regarding three of the hot topics for this school year: <a href=”https://meetings.boardbook.org/Public/Agenda/1807?meeting=748461″>school transformation</a>, <a href=”https://meetings.boardbook.org/Documents/FileViewerOrPublic/1807?file=35c1d534-d8d3-4452-9193-67ade8f7ec11″>the proposed new building for Anishinabe Academy</a> and the <a href=”https://meetings.boardbook.org/Documents/FileViewerOrPublic/1807?file=ed800edf-fb13-48ad-870f-58a9062b0275″>budget</a> for next year.
<ul class=”wp-block-list”>
<li>The transformation resolution did not contain any language on closings or mergers, but did require the superintendent to come up with a plan by this fall. </li>
<li>The budget resolution set in place the budget work that has gone on for nine months. You can read more about this <a href=”https://twincities.documenters.org/reporting/?search=minneapolis+board+of+education+budget”>in our past notes</a>, especially from the <a href=”https://twincities.documenters.org/assignments/minneapolis-board-of-education-work-session-19381/report/”>March 17</a>, <a href=”https://twincities.documenters.org/assignments/minneapolis-board-of-education-19843/report/”>April 14</a> and <a href=”https://twincities.documenters.org/assignments/minneapolis-board-of-education-20414/report/”>May 12</a> meetings.
<ul class=”wp-block-list”>
<li>Since the initial budget reading, the district <a href=”https://www.minnpost.com/documenters/2026/05/mps-shares-plans-for-spending-newly-recovered-revenue/”>corrected an error</a> resulting in the deficit shrinking from $50 million to about $37 million. About 100 positions were restored for education support professionals, counselors, social workers, media specialists and adult education teachers. </li>
<li>The district <a href=”https://www.mpschools.org/departments/finance/budget/2026-27-budget-process”>has a budget website with more information</a>, although it doesn’t include a comparison to prior years, making it difficult to assess changes. </li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>The resolution on Anishinabe Academy requires the superintendent to come up with a budget for the proposed new building at the site of the former Cooper Elementary School “while also recognizing potential alternative MPS sites may arise for consideration through the Transformation process.”</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
<ul class=”wp-block-list”>
<li>The board heard from about 20 people during public comment. Parents, teachers and residents raised some alarms about moving too quickly on closing and merging of schools. Neighbors of the proposed Anishinabe Academy project spoke against the project. </li>
</ul>
<ul class=”wp-block-list”>
<li>The board also approved <a href=”https://meetings.boardbook.org/Documents/FileViewerOrPublic/1807?file=7a8d3219-fd8e-4c8c-98a5-263732a0c6d0″>revisions</a> to its public comment guidelines, which will give greater priority to current MPS students, caregivers and staff for the 25 available slots. </li>
</ul>
<h2 id=”h-observations-and-follow-up-questions-nbsp” class=”wp-block-heading”>Observations and follow up questions: </h2>
<p><strong><em>Accessibility:</em></strong><em> Did you face any challenges that made it harder to document the meeting or that may have made it difficult for others to attend?</em></p>
<ul class=”wp-block-list”>
<li>All good. </li>
</ul>
<p><strong><em>Scene: </em></strong><em>About how many members of the public attended the meeting? If watching virtually, what was the livestream count (if applicable)? Was anyone protesting outside? </em></p>
<ul class=”wp-block-list”>
<li>It was a full house at the beginning of the meeting, and about 20 by the end.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong><em>Notable: </em></strong><em>Do you have any follow up questions or other observations to share? </em></p>
<ul class=”wp-block-list”>
<li>The board wound up its workload for the year with a series of amendments. If you read the transformation plan resolution, you would never know that it was about downsizing the district, closing schools, or merging schools.</li>
</ul>
<h2 id=”h-how-to-get-involved” class=”wp-block-heading”>How to get involved:</h2>
