Intel Arc G3 Extreme vs Intel Core Ultra 7 processors
One of the key differences between the Claw 8 EX AI+ and Claw 8 AI+ is with their respective Intel processor. The Claw 8 EX AI+ is the world’s first handheld gaming device that’s fitted with Intel Arc G3 Extreme processors, which is the first Intel chip specifically designed for handheld gaming.
According to Intel, Arc G3 Extreme delivers a “significant leap” in graphics performance and enables AAA gaming – even for extended gaming sessions. Not only that, but Intel promises that the chips have been optimised for Windows 11’s full-screen Xbox mode too, which is a pretty hefty frustration many have with other Windows-based handhelds.
The Claw 8 AI+, on the other hand, is powered by Intel Core Ultra 7 processor. While the Claw was able to achieve impressively high benchmark scores, beating the likes of Steam Deck OLED and the Lenovo Legion Go, we did find real-world use to be hit-and-miss.

While titles such as Rocket League, FC 25 and Firewatch were able to see steady 60fps, more graphically demanding titles like Horizon Zero Dawn struggled. In fact, we found Kingdom Come Deliversance’s fps dropped down to just 16, and required us to drop the graphical settings.
With this in mind, we’re hopeful that Intel Arc G3 Extreme will provide a more reliable gaming experience, though we’ll have to wait until we get our hands on the console to see.
Claw 8 Ex AI Plus sports ergonomic grips
Another big difference between the handhelds is with their design. MSI has redesigned the Claw 8 Ex AI+’s chassis to incorporate ergonomic grips for better comfort during longer sessions. In addition, the handheld sports refined bumpers and a responsive D-pad for greater precision and control too.

This is a welcome and promising upgrade, as we found the Claw 8 AI+ could get uncomfortable after prolonged use. Sure, there are ergonomic grips at play here, but we did need to take breaks or find something to rest the console on.
Claw 8 Ex AI Plus promises faster response times
Unlike its predecessor, the Claw 8 EX AI+ is fitted with a new “high-end” linear motor that MSI promises will provide faster response times, more refined haptic feedback and improved power efficiency.

That’s not to say we had many issues with the Claw 8 AI Plus’ responsiveness. In fact, we found overall the handheld was responsive, especially thanks to the D-pad, shoulder and trigger buttons.

Both are fitted with an 80Whr battery
While there are plenty of differences between the two, we’ll turn our attention to key similarities. Both the Claw 8 EX AI+ and 8 AI+ are fitted with an 80Whr battery.
The fact that MSI hasn’t changed the battery is perhaps unsurprising, given how well it performed in the 8 AI+. In fact, we concluded that the handheld offered some of the best battery life on the market, delivering around three hours and 19 minutes in our PCMark 10 tests. Sure, the exact battery life will depend on the game and settings you’ve enabled, but generally we can’t fault it.
With this in mind, we can expect the Claw 8 EX AI+ to offer a similar performance, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Both have an eight-inch 120Hz display
Both the Claw 8 handsets are equipped with an eight-inch, FHD+, 120Hz IPS panel. We are somewhat disappointed by the decision to stick with an IPS panel as we found dark scenes struggled on the Claw 8 AI+.

Having said that, overall the Claw 8 AI+ packed in plenty of detail, and offered rich and vibrant colours. Perhaps MSI will unveil an OLED iteration one day, but for now it should suffice.
Early Verdict
With Intel Arc G3 Extreme under its hood, the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ looks like a promising upgrade over the Claw 8 AI+. However, as we don’t currently know how much the handheld will cost, the question as to whether the Claw 8 EX AI+ is really worth it remains at large.
We’ll be sure to update this versus once we review the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+.
