Summary:
- The board received a presentation on how the county is transitioning to contracting with local providers after closing its detox and withdrawal program Dec. 31.
- In the ‘90s, a state law was passed requiring that all counties provide detoxification facilities as an alternative to incarceration. As of last year, Ramsey was one of two counties operating its own program rather than contracting with local providers, according to the county website.
- The county is now in “phase two” of its bridge plan for connecting residents with local providers and has the phone line staffed with embedded social workers.
- It’s estimated that a local provider will be licensed to provide detox and withdrawal management services in the same location as the old program by January 2027.
- During this gap period, the program’s website is a “vital resource” with information on where people can access detox assistance.
- The board approved three consent agenda items without discussion:
Observations and follow up questions:
Accessibility: Did you face any challenges that made it harder to document the meeting or that may have made it difficult for others to attend? For example: trouble accessing the location, difficulty hearing the discussion, lack of nameplates for elected officials, or the agenda being unclear, disorganized, or incomplete.
Scene: About how many members of the public attended the meeting? If watching virtually, what was the livestream count (if applicable)? Was anyone protesting outside?
Notable: Do you have any follow up questions or other observations to share? What stood out to you as interesting or confusing? Is there anything you’d like to see reporters look further into? Were there any particularly memorable quotes?
- There was a lot of frustration about federal funding not reaching the county.
How to get involved:
When is the next meeting for this board/committee? Any upcoming public hearings? Online surveys? The county board next meets May 26.
