Some of the Best A24 Movies Are Streaming for Free

A24 has emerged as one of the most original production companies in recent years. And while the films it produces span every genre — from horror to documentary to comedy and beyond — the entertainment house has become synonymous with a certain aesthetic.

The company has attracted singular filmmakers like Sofia Coppola, Ari Aster, Yorgos Lanthimos and Barry Jenkins, who have helped define the company’s creative ethos to the point that it’s often easy to recognize a film as being an A24 production. And its films are not just underground hits, either. Many of them, like Minari, The Zone of Interest and Everything Everywhere All at Once, have also won Oscars.

While HBO Max is the premier destination to stream the most A24 films, you can find some of its best movies across several free streaming services such as Kanopy, Tubi Pluto TV and Plex. This March, catch acclaimed films like The Bling Ring, Midsommar and Aftersun — and loads more, which have all recently arrived to these services.

The 2022 drama Aftersun stars Paul Mescal as Calum, the young father of an 11-year-old named Sophie (Frankie Corio). The two take a holiday to a Turkish beach resort together, and the film is a moving, lovely character study of their relationship and a reflection on their fleeting, shared moments together. We later see an adult Sophie watching the camcorder footage she shot, reconnecting with the memories of her past. The critically acclaimed film is available on several platforms this month, including Tubi, Pluto TV and Kanopy.

Set in 1979 Santa Barbara, 20th Century Women is a semi-autobiographical drama inspired by director Mike Mills’ life. The coming of age film stars Lucas Jade Zumann as a 15-year-old kid growing up with his single mom (Annette Bening) and the boarders living in their house, 24-year-old Abbie (Greta Gerwig) and a carpenter named William (Billy Crudup), and dealing with his feelings for his best friend Julie (Elle Fanning). Bening earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role and the film received an Oscar nod for Best Original Screenplay.

Amy Winehouse died in 2011 from alcohol poisoning at the age of 27. If you were only familiar with Winehouse from her near-constant presence in the tabloids, the 2015 documentary Amy, directed by Asif Kapadia, will make you realize just how talented she was. Amy is a devastating look at a young woman with otherworldly talents who struggled under the weight of fame. The film features interviews with her closest friends, as well as colleagues like Mark Ronson, Mos Def and Tony Bennett, and never-before-seen footage before and during her rise to fame.

A24

The 2013 crime drama The Bling Ring was directed by Sofia Coppola and features Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, Katie Chang and Israel Broussard as part of a group of thieves known as the Bling Ring. Based on real criminals, the thieves would target celebrities and steal from their homes. The film features cameos from real-life theft victims Kirsten Dunst and Paris Hilton, who appear in the film as themselves. The Bling Ring is out now on Kanopy, Tubi and Pluto TV.

A24

The Zone of Interest, which won Best International Feature at the Oscars in 2024, is written and directed by Jonathan Glazer and loosely based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Martin Amis. The film takes a look at the idyllic life of German Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss who, along with his wife Hedwig, raise their five children in the shadow of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Separated only by a garden wall, the family goes about their seemingly normal, every day lives as countless people are imprisoned and killed just beyond the gates of their home.

A24

Ari Aster’s 2019 folk horror Midsommar stars Florence Pugh as Dani, an American student who visits Sweden with her boyfriend and some friends to take part in a midsummer festival on a commune. Things get dicey as it turns out that the cult requires new guests like Dani and her friends to participate in mating and sacrifice rituals that are hardly the fun Scandinavian holiday of their dreams.

Amazon Prime Video

Minari is a semi-autobiographical story based on director Lee Isaac Chung’s upbringing. Nominated for six Oscars, the film is the story of a family of South Korean immigrants who relocate from California to Arkansas during the 1980s. Youn Yuh-jung won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Soon-ja, the family matriarch who emigrates from South Korea to live with the family, and the film co-stars Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri and Alan Kim.

A new class-action lawsuit, filed on Monday by three teenage girls and their guardians, alleges that Elon Musk’s xAI created and distributed child sexual abuse material featuring their faces and likenesses with its Grok AI tech.

“Their lives have been shattered by the devastating loss of privacy, dignity, and personal safety that the production and dissemination of this CSAM have caused,” the filing says. “xAI’s financial gain through the increased use of its image- and video-making product came at their expense and well-being.”

From December to early January, Grok allowed many AI and X social media users to create AI-generated nonconsensual intimate images, sometimes known as deepfake porn. Reports estimate that Grok users made 4.4 million “undressed” or “nudified” images, 41% of the total number of images created, over a period of nine days.

X, xAI and its safety and child safety divisions did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The wave of “undressed” images stirred outrage around the world. The European Commission quickly launched an investigation, while Malaysia and Indonesia banned X within their borders. Some US government representatives called on Apple and Google to remove the app from their app stores for violating their policies, but no federal investigation into X or xAI has been opened. A similar, separate class-action lawsuit was filed (PDF) by a South Carolina woman in late January.

The dehumanizing trend highlighted just how capable modern AI image tools are at creating content that seems realistic. The new complaint compares Grok’s self-proclaimed “spicy AI” generation to the “dark arts” with its ease of subjecting children to “any pose, however sick, however fetishized, however unlawful.”

“To the viewer, the resulting video appears entirely real. For the child, her identifying features will now forever be attached to a video depicting her own child sexual abuse,” the complaint reads.

The complaint says xAI is at fault because it did not employ industry-standard guardrails that would prevent abusers from making this content. It says xAI licensed use of its tech to third-party companies abroad, which sold subscriptions that led abusers to make child sexual abuse images featuring the faces and likenesses of the victims. The requests ran through xAI’s servers, which makes the company liable, the complaint argues.

The lawsuit was filed by three Jane Does, pseudonyms given to the teens to protect their identities. Jane Doe 1 was first alerted to the fact that abusive, AI-generated sexual material of her was circulating on the web by an anonymous Instagram message in early December. The filing says she was told about a Discord server by the anonymous Instagram user, where the material was shared. That led Jane Doe 1 and her family, and eventually law enforcement, to find and arrest one perpetrator.

Ongoing investigations led the families of Jane Does 2 and 3 to learn their children’s images had been transformed with xAI tech into abusive material.
