As a seasoned team here at Travel Off Path, it takes a lot to truly leave us gobsmacked, as they say across the pond.
The truth is, travel has taken a turn, with overtourism concerns boiling over in some of the world’s biggest household names — Barcelona being the obvious poster child lately.
So when we see destinations rolling out the welcome mat — or at least trying very hard to portray themselves that way — we don’t need our morning coffee to perk up.
As such, the following 5 destinations each come with their own shock factor: some are falling short in the tourism department, while others surprisingly want more visitors despite already being wildly popular.
The U.S. Of A 🇺🇸
Let’s start in the heartland, shall we?
While domestic tourism may be stable, international tourism has tanked.
Point fingers however you want, but we’ve dabbled in this in various forms, such as revealing Canadians aren’t crossing into neighboring Maine like they used to.
Whether it be political ping-pong or a growing maze of entry hurdles, the fact is America has lost some of its appeal to international travelers, especially as new visa requirements for certain countries have made it more of a headache to cross off numerous bucket-list cities we hold near and dear.
Another aspect is safety concerns. Multiple countries have issued various security alerts regarding safety.

With Athens always a raging summer hotspot and Santorini packed to the gills despite its sky-high prices, sure, there are other little-known Greek islands, but when is enough enough?
Well, Greece claims it’s not actually whitewashed islands travelers are missing; it’s the gorgeous mountains that go overshadowed by seaside wine and cliffside villas.
Quoting “the endless green”, tourism officials are pushing visitors to go beyond the shoreline for regions such as Thessaly and Volos, a pair of names not often found on itineraries.
But there are beautiful traditional villages, nature hikes, skiing, and more too often overlooked that still feel undiscovered.

If you’ve somehow ended up on the same algorithm I’m on, you’ll see Bangladesh pop up quite a bit on socials, but more often for visitors steeped in curiosity than for those seeking luxury or sun-kissed shores.
But, despite most travelers willing to brave Bangladesh, kicking off their adventure in the urban sprawl of Dhaka, believe it or not, this country is a beach destination, with such places as Cox’s Bazaar cleaning up its act to become more mainstream.
Additionally, the latest tourism campaign is promoting its culture — no, not the questionable street food on TikTok — to lure more curious minds who’ve grown tired of cookie-cutter destinations. Safety perception has a long way to go as travelers claim to feel unsafe, voting it down to just 50/100 according to the latest score:
Myanmar 🇲🇲
You may have noticed a theme here, starting off with the most notable names and working our way around the globe further from home.
Myanmar is located in Southeast Asia, yet goes overlooked despite its mega-popular neighbors due to its reputation for stringent government practices and headache-inducing entry rules.
But this war-torn nation is dead set on changing its tune to become yet another Southeast Asian hotspot for travelers closely tracking the situation and looking to embrace astounding temples, otherworldly nature, and warm, hospitable people, a far cry from its government’s iron fist.
As for how safe travelers may feel — well, let’s just say there’s a long way to go, but you gotta start somewhere! Myanmar’s current score is a very low 15/100.
Syria 🇸🇾

As one of the most historic countries on Earth, expect to see captivating ruins, grand mosques, Old World bazaars, and perhaps most surprising, postcard-worthy turquoise waters in one of the last frontiers for Mediterranean tourism.
Syria’s tourism campaign, which in itself feels awkward to type because it was so off-limits for decades, is showcasing future festivals and cultural extravaganzas as it seeks to revive a virtually dead economic engine.
Like Myanmar, it sits mightily low on our Safety Index with a 15/100 score:
