The first thing I’ll miss is the sound. Not the loud drums and colorful spectacle of Baragatan Festival 2026, although those certainly made this trip unforgettable. It is the quieter moments—the rustle of century-old trees along Rizal Avenue, the hum of tricycles passing along the main street, the laughter of locals gathered around food stalls, and the gentle breeze from the sea at sunset.

As I sit here on my last day in Puerto Princesa, luggage still unpacked and my flight home only hours away, I find myself doing what I always do before leaving Palawan.

I’m already thinking about when I’ll return.

Two weeks ago, together with fellow travel writers, I arrived in Puerto Princesa to cover the Baragatan Festival 2026. Like many work trips, I expected packed schedules, endless note-taking, and countless photographs. What I didn’t expect was how quickly I would once again fall under the city’s quiet spell.

Because Puerto Princesa doesn’t overwhelm you. It slowly draws you in. And before you know it, leaving becomes the hardest part.

The Festival That Made Me Fall in Love with Puerto Princesa All Over Again

For two weeks, Puerto Princesa was my home.

The Provincial Capitol grounds transformed into a vibrant showcase of Palawan’s identity. Municipal booths representing all 23 towns lined Fernandez Street, each telling stories through colorful architecture, native materials, handicrafts, and culinary traditions. Every corner seemed to celebrate the province’s incredible diversity.

At night, the city glowed with excitement. Music echoed through the streets. Crowds gathered around performances. Families strolled together beneath strings of lights while food vendors prepared grilled seafood and local delicacies.

One morning, while watching the Pantigao’t Pista street dancers move gracefully along Rizal Street, I realized something.

I wasn’t merely covering a festival.

I was experiencing the soul of Palawan.

Baragatan wasn’t just an event; it was a celebration of identity, community, and heritage.

And somehow, amidst all the festivities, Puerto Princesa still retained its signature calm.

Even after enduring long, street-dance coverage, I never experienced exhaustion. Instead, I felt a renewed sense of energy and vitality. Such a feeling is truly rare and exceptional.

Paradise Is Only a Flight Away

One reason I never hesitate to return is that Puerto Princesa remains one of the easiest destinations to reach.

Whether from Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Clark, Davao, or other major cities in the Philippines, direct flights make spontaneous trips possible.

In just over an hour from Manila, the skyline gives way to emerald mountains and blue waters.

The moment I step out of Puerto Princesa International Airport, I immediately feel lighter. Perhaps it’s psychological. Or perhaps this city simply has that effect on people.

The city requires no complicated journey. No endless transfers.

Just a smooth arrival and a familiar excitement that says, “Welcome back.”

Wanderlust Bed and Breakfast Became My Home for Seven Nights

For much of this trip, I stayed at Wanderlust Bed and Breakfast.

Located along Rizal Avenue, only minutes from the airport, it quickly became more than just a place to sleep. It became my home and my kilometer zero for my morning and evening walks.

After long days covering Baragatan events, it became my sanctuary. Every morning started quietly.

The aroma of coffee welcomed me downstairs. Fellow travel writers exchanged stories over breakfast while planning another day of exploring Puerto Princesa. By evening, we would return tired but happy, sharing photos, laughing over memorable moments, and discussing where to eat next.

There was something comforting about coming back each night. No grand luxury, no extravagant experiences. Just warm hospitality and the feeling that I was staying in a home rather than a hotel.

Seven nights passed quickly.

By the end of my stay, I felt a strong connection to the familiar surroundings and friendly faces. Every day at the cafe, I met new people, each with their own stories—mostly inspiring—and before I knew it, it was already midnight. It was fulfilling to have meaningful conversations with strangers who eventually became friends.

Meaningful conversations teach me a lot and make me feel comfortable. Sometimes, this comfort leaves the strongest impression.

Discovering Tranquility at Amorita Resort Palawan

In contrast to the bustling festival atmosphere, my stay at Amorita Resort Palawan offered a completely different experience.

Nestled among tropical gardens overlooking the Sulu Sea, the resort felt like a hidden sanctuary.

The moment I entered my Premier Suite, everything slowed down.

Sunlight filtered through expansive windows while soft sea breezes drifted into the room. Outside, mangroves stretched toward the shoreline, creating a peaceful landscape that seemed worlds away from the city center, despite being only minutes away.

Lunch at Katala Restaurant became one of the highlights of my stay.

I still remember the Aubergreen Crisp—crispy eggplant chips topped with green mangoes, pickled onions, pumpkin seeds, and ginger yogurt dressing. It was refreshing and beautifully presented.

Then came the Inasal ala Puebla, where citrus-annatto-grilled chicken met a rich tablea mole crust and sweet fried plantains. Every bite reflected the creativity and elegance that define Amorita.

As sunset painted the Sulu Sea in shades of orange and gold, I realized how fortunate I was to experience this side of Puerto Princesa.

Luxury here doesn’t scream; it whispers and reminds you to chill, so I did.

The Funny Lion Puerto Princesa Remains One of My Favorite Escapes

Every time I stay at The Funny Lion Puerto Princesa, I am reminded why boutique hotels can feel so special. There’s an intimacy to the property that larger resorts sometimes lack.

From the warm smiles at check-in to the relaxing ambiance around the pool, everything feels personal.

Mornings here are among my favorite moments.

Breakfasts are leisurely.

Afternoons invite slow swims and quiet reading.

Evenings are spent watching the sky transform into brilliant shades of pink while enjoying the calm atmosphere.

The Funny Lion perfectly captures what Puerto Princesa does best.

I experience relaxation that feels genuine and effortless, free from any sense of pretension. The resort perfectly combines a stylish aesthetic with an inviting and approachable vibe, making everyone feel comfortable. The atmosphere exudes sophistication and elegance, yet remains warm and welcoming, avoiding any intimidating or exclusive undertones.

It feels modern, but still unmistakably Palawan. Every visit leaves me wanting another night.

And somehow, one night always turns into several.

Puerto Princesa Moves at a Different Pace

What I appreciate most after spending two weeks here is the city’s rhythm.

My Friend Andea confessed why she invited me for two long weeks, and that is for me to appreciate the city she fell in love with. And I totally got it now, I’m planning to stay longer next time, to be honest.

In this city, people move at a relaxed pace, and traffic is still manageable. Conversations flow easily, and life seems slower.

After years of constant, fast-paced travel, Puerto Princesa offers something increasingly difficult to find.

Many evenings, I found myself simply walking along Rizal Avenue, trying to complete at least 8,000 steps. I felt safer, and walking here never gets boring.

My schedule was relaxed with no packed plans, focusing on simple, pressure-free moments.

And those simple moments often become the memories that stay with me longest.

The Food Alone Is Worth Coming Back For

No trip to Puerto Princesa is complete without visiting new or familiar places to eat.

Twice during this trip, I found myself returning to Badjao Seafront Restaurant.

Perched above mangroves, the restaurant remains one of my favorite places for seafood.

The fish sinigang was comforting and rich. The sizzling squid was tender and perfectly seasoned.

The kinilaw na tanigue tasted incredibly fresh. And their ginataang talong remains one of the most underrated dishes I’ve encountered in Palawan.

Another favorite was Viet Ville, a cozy eatery where each bowl of chaolong noodles was a comforting embrace, its rich aroma and flavorful broth filling the senses and evoking warmth with every bite.

The warm broth, tender beef, and crusty bread reminded me why this Vietnamese-inspired dish has become part of Puerto Princesa’s identity.

Even now, as I prepare to leave, I know exactly what will happen.

A few months from now, I’ll suddenly crave chaolong.

And once that happens, I’ll probably start checking flights again.

Hidden Beaches, Rolling Hills, and Endless Sunsets

Puerto Princesa rewards those who stay longer.

Beyond the Underground River and Honda Bay lie places that continue to surprise me.

Tala Beach remains one of my most cherished retreats, a serene escape where tranquility prevails. Its pristine, powdery sands stretch gently along the shoreline, bordered by lush greenery and swaying palm trees that provide natural shade and add to its idyllic charm.

The calm, turquoise waters shimmer under the golden sunlight, reflecting the clear blue sky above. Uncrowded and peaceful, Tala Beach offers a breathtaking panorama that vividly illustrates why Palawan is renowned worldwide as one of the most beautiful islands, a true paradise for those seeking natural beauty and serene solitude.

Even Baker’s Hill, with its charming gardens and pastries, provided moments of simple joy.

These locations do not seek attention; instead, they quietly wait to be explored. Perhaps this is what makes them truly beautiful.

Why Puerto Princesa Keeps Calling Me Back

As I slowly pack my luggage and prepare for another flight home, I realize that Puerto Princesa has become more than just a destination.

It has become familiar and comforting. Almost like seeing an old friend.

Maybe it’s the easy accessibility from Manila, or maybe it’s the affordability that allows me to stay longer. Perhaps it’s the comforting bowls of chaolong, or the warm smiles that greet me everywhere I go. Or maybe it’s something harder to explain.

Some places just leave a lasting impression. Puerto Princesa isn’t showy or demanding of attention. Instead, it quietly unveils its charm.

And before you know it, you’re sitting in your hotel room on your last day, looking at your suitcase, wondering why leaving feels so difficult.

I know this isn’t goodbye, it never is.

Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned after all these years, it’s this:

Puerto Princesa always finds a way to call me back. And every single time, I answer.
